The Hasan School of Business at Colorado State University-Pueblo received notification that its students had the fourth highest pass rate in the state on the most recent Certified Public Accountant examination. The report was issued by the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy using 2007 CPA Exam statistics.
CSU-Pueblo students achieved a 51.5 percent rate (higher than the national average of 47 percent) with 17 of 33 students passing from those who sat for the examination. CSU-Pueblo trailed Ft. Lewis, CU-Boulder, and CSU-Ft Collins, with the highest rate at 55.4 percent.
The Uniform CPA Examination consists of four parts: Auditing and Attestation, Financial Accounting and Reporting, Business Environment and Concepts, and Regulation. The exam takes two days to complete and may be taken one part at a time. The candidate has 18 months from the time the first part is passed to complete the entire exam.
“I am extremely pleased with the success of our local accounting graduates on the CPA exam,” said Geri Wink, president of the Southeast Chapter of the Colorado Society of CPAs and HSB faculty member. “That means even more excellent accountants for the state of Colorado and our profession.”
College graduates in accounting and finance should be pleasantly surprised by their prospects given the current downturn in the economy. Robert Half’s 2008 Salary Guide reports that public accounting firms, private industry and not-for-profit organizations throughout the United States are eager to hire financial talent and are planning to grow staffs in a variety of areas vital to business operations from payroll to credit and collections to tax services.
CSU-Pueblo would have topped the list with just two more students passing. CSU-Pueblo business students outperformed those at other Colorado schools, including Metro State College of Denver, Regis University, University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, and the University of Denver.
