CSU–Pueblo mass comm professor earns regional journalism award


Colorado State University-Pueblo Associate Professor Richard Joyce was awarded third place in personal column writing at the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) regional event held last week in Denver. In addition to being a CSU-Pueblo faculty member, Joyce is a columnist for the Redstone Review published in Lyons, Colo. He earned the award his 2008 columns covering political and social issues.

The annual awards competition recognizes excellence in journalism from throughout a four-state region that includes Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, and New Mexico. Journalists submitted 800 entries overall from 50 weekly and daily newspapers. Competition judges included journalists from SPJ chapters in San Diego, Pittsburgh, and Little Rock.

First place went to John Hazlehurst of the Colorado Springs Business Journal and second place went to Kathleen Spring of the Lyons Recorder. Joyce directs the journalism emphasis in the CSU-Pueblo Mass Communications Department and Center for New Media.
