CSU–Pueblo student magazine earns journalist award

Students at Colorado State University-Pueblo earned a second place Mark of Excellence Award in the Best Student Magazine category as part of a competition by Region 9 of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) for the 2008 calendar year. SPJ Region 9 includes Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. This year, collegiate journalists submitted more than 3,600 entries in 39 categories across SPJ’s 12 regions.

CSU-Pueblo Today staff members earned a second place award as runner-up to the staff at CSU Fort Collin’s College Avenue, who took top honors in the category. No third place award was presented.

CSU-Pueblo students, through its Department of Mass Communications and Center for New Media, began publishing a quarterly Today news magazine in fall 2007 (for the 2007-2008 academic year). That conversion also included more regular updating of the Today Web site and a move to an external Web site (www.csupueblotoday.com). Prior to that, the University had a student Web site on campus that was updated periodically as well as a biweekly newspaper. In spring 2008, students began distributing headlines from the Web site weekly to the campus community via e-mail. The magazine is published quarterly (fall, winter, spring, summer) and has a circulation of 3,000 with distribution on campus, at Pueblo high schools, and at several Pueblo businesses and non-profit organizations.

The honorees were recognized on April 4 during the regional spring conference held at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah. First place regional winners advance to the national round of judging. National winners will be announced in mid-May.
