Jazz Trumpeter to perform at CSU-Pueblo for Black History Month

In honor of Black History Month, Colorado State University-Pueblo’s Multicultural Center and Athletics Department, the Heaton Middle School Bands, and the Pueblo City-County Library District will sponsor two events featuring jazz trumpeter Scotty Barnhart next week.
Jazz trumpeter Scotty Barnhart, a soloist with the Count Basie Orchestra and professor of jazz studies at Florida State University, will conduct a jazz workshop/clinic with the CSU-Pueblo Jazz Ensembles from 11 a.m.- 1 p.m., on Thurs., Feb. 22, in Hoag Recital Hall. Later that afternoon,

Barnhart will present a concert and book signing at the Rawlings Library, 100 E. Abriendo Ave., from 4 - 5:30 p.m. This lecture-demonstration will highlight his book, "The World of Jazz Trumpet: A Comprehensive History and Practical Philosophy."
Barnhart’s book does more than provide a history of the trumpet, spanning all styles of jazz – from its New Orleans beginnings to swing to bop to hard bop, free jazz, and beyond. It is an oral history of jazz, and so is a must-read for students, instructors, professional musicians, and jazz lovers around the world.

Both events are free and open to the public.
A graduate of Florida A&M University, Barnhart has performed and recorded with Frank Sinatra, Wynton Marsalis, Tony Bennett, Clark Terry, Tito Puente, and other legendary musicians. He is profiled in the book Trumpet Kings, which places him with the greatest jazz trumpeters in history from Louis Armstrong to Miles Davis. He appears on two Grammy Award winning recordings with the Count Basie Orchestra and also on three critically acclaimed recordings by pianist Marcus Roberts. Currently, he can be heard on Billboard top-10 jazz album, Ray Sings: Basie Swings opposite the late great Ray Charles.
