The state of energy and energy policy in the United States will be the focus of a presentation by Dick Stegemeier, former CEO and chairman of Unocal, sponsored by the Hasan School of Business at Colorado State University-Pueblo next month.
Stegemeier will present “The Geopolitics of Energy in the 21st Century” beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, March 30, in the Hasan School of Business Auditorium. His lecture is the second of three in the business school’s Distinguished Speakers Series.
Stegemeier’s talk is vital and timely with gasoline prices approaching $3 a gallon last year, the escalating cost of heating fuel, the saber rattling of Venezuelan president Hugo Sanchez, China’s rapidly growing dependence on oil, the never-ending conflicts in the Middle East, the global warming debate, and the regular introductions of new energy technologies and resources.
In 1983, Union Oil Company of California became an operating subsidiary of a new holdings company named Unocal, whose name they took on in 1985. In the 1990s, under the guidance of long-time leader Fred Hartley, Stegemeier, and new CEO Roger C. Beach, Unocal became the largest independent oil and gas producers, with new prospects opening up in Gabon, Brazil, Bangledesh, Afghanistan and their favorite spot, the Gulf of Mexico. When Dick Stegemeier was named president in late 1985, he, Hartley and their executive team faced enormous challenges in streamlining the company. They reduced the debt from $6.1 billion to less than $4 billion by mid-1990. Stegemeier succeeded Hartley, who retired as chairman and CEO before the end of the decade.
A continental breakfast will be provided for all guests. RSVP by calling 719-549-2142.
