CSU–Pueblo nursing students to host Riverwalk Criterium, Pandemic Flu Expo

Witness the speed and agility of professional cyclists racing through the streets of historic downtown Pueblo while learning more about preparing for a flu pandemic on Sunday, July 1 as Colorado State University – Pueblo (CSU-Pueblo) nursing students host the Race for Pandemic Flu Preparedness along with the American Cycling Association (ACA).

Four CSU-Pueblo nursing students -- Lew Perna, Rebecca Eubank, Kevin Johnston, and Eric Schraeder – devised the race, video, and expo as part of a class assignment to increase awareness of pandemic on the CSU-Pueblo campus, but opted to expand the audience to the entire Pueblo community.

Kids under 8 and juniors, ages 8 to 14 and 15 to 18, compete free in separate categories beginning at 8 a.m. Riders in the Master Men and Senior Women categories must pay $25 for a first race and $10 for a second shot at the safe, flat, and fast 0.8 mile course. All adult riders must have an ACA license, with one-day licenses available for $10 on the day of the race.

As cyclists speed around the L-shaped course through historic downtown Pueblo, nursing students and a variety of local agencies and organizations will educate visitors about the realities of a pandemic flu and ways to prepare for its possible affects on families and communities. Videos created by the students and the Pueblo City-County Health Department will be shown, and representatives of agencies such as the City-County Health Department, Parkview Medical Center, St. Mary Corwin Regional Medical Center, and Spanish Peaks Mental Health Center will be available to answer questions on the subject. Vendors interested in participating may rent booth space for $10; for questions on booth registration, please call Rebecca Eubank at 719-369-0929.
