Expert to Speak on Overseas Pakistanis’ and Pakistan’s Growing Influence on the Global Economy

With more than $200 billion in resources, the estimated 1 million Pakistanis living in the United States and Canada have the capacity to significantly enhance the development of Pakistan's economy and improve the country’s standing in the global economy.

If Pakistanis living in Western countries and the Middle East establish joint ventures with the Pakistani entrepreneurs, the country's economy – which grew a significant 8.4 percent during 2005 and at a similar rate in 2006 – would continue its remarkable growth and further strengthen its position globally. The direct investment to Pakistan will leave a profound impact on the country's economy far beyond reducing poverty.

Dominic Pulera, an internationally recognized expert on matters involving race, culture and diversity, will address diaspora Pakistanis’ vital role in the development of Pakistan’s economic development in his talk “Making It Happen: The Overseas Pakistanis, Pakistan’s Next Generation, and Success in a Global Economy.” His talk, part of the Hasan School of Business Distinguished Speakers Series, begins at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 26, in the Hasan Auditorium. Refreshments will be provided immediately after the lecture.

Among the topics Pulera will address are the success of Pakistani-Americans; Americans' views of international trade; Americans' views of the world in the post 9/11 era; the linkages of overseas Pakistanis with Pakistan; and some reflections on Pakistan's image abroad and how it affects the efforts to attract greater amounts of tourism and foreign direct investment to Pakistan.

Pulera is a member of the Academy of Political Science, the Southern Political Science Association, the Western Political Science Association, and the American Academy of Political and Social Science. His writings include three well-received works of serious nonfiction: “Visible Differences,” “Sharing the Dream,” and “Green White and Red.” Pulera is also the owner of Pulera International, an independent consulting firm that helps businesses improve their workforce productivity, increase their sales, and enhance their public image.
