CSU–Pueblo art class lends talent to area non-profit organizations

Colorado State University-Pueblo art students gave of their time and talent to eight area non-profit organizations and two on-campus entities as part of an advanced graphic design course this spring.

Maya Avina’s Advanced Graphic Design class gave students an experience parallel to the print graphic design industry through the creation of a variety of graphic design services for 10 on and off-campus clients. The artwork ranged from logos for Huerfano County, Solspire, Frontier Pathways Scenic Byway, Pueblo Library District All Pueblo Reads, and City of Rocky Ford to poster designs for a student club at Colorado School of Mines and the expansion campaign for the Pueblo Community Health Center.

According to Avina, the class operates as a real design studio and has been completing jobs for non-profit clients since 1996. Past projects have included posters for CSU-Pueblo Jazz Festival, Greenway and Nature Center Bluegrass Festival, CO Springs Care and Share, logos for Mountain Park Environmental Center, Sangre de Cristo Arts & Conference Center Dance Center, Pueblo Performing Arts Guild, Pueblo County Recycling program, TREC Therapeutic Riding & Education Center, Southeastern Colorado Heritage Center and a map for Pueblo Recycling.
Students filled managerial positions like you would see in a real design studio (Business Manager, Art Director, Production Manager, Traffic Control Manager, and Computer Manager), but all students in the class also were designers, who contributed two to three proposals for each job.

Rough viewings were held with the clients, which involved all proposals mounted and displayed similarly so that no one body of work stood out other than for design excellence. Clients then select one design, which was refined according to their needs by the artist who designed that piece. Additional viewings brought edits that ended in the final production.

Janet Fieldman, Chief Foundation Officer of the Pueblo Community Health Center Foundation, had this to say about her work with the students.

“From the initial meeting, the students assigned to our project were very professional. They listened to our needs and captured the public image we wanted to portray,” she said. “If we had contracted with an advertising agency, not only would the costs have been a major concern, the process would have taken much longer. We have incorporated the wonderful design into several promotional pieces already—and we are only at the front end of this major campaign!”

Midori Clark, community relations manager for the Pueblo City-County Library District said she looks forward to the students annually assisting the library district’s All Pueblo Reads program.

“Working with the Advanced Design students has been an awesome experience,” Clark said. “In addition to saving us lots of money, it’s always delightful to see what their creative minds produce. We treasure this partnership and look forward to continued success in the future.”
